Because the donor area is filled in either with a piece of remnant carpet or is left unrepaired carpet patching is considered to be imperfect but a net overall improvement.

If carpet tape is not doing the job you can also use carpet glue to hold the patch in position.
Apply carpet adhesive to the fabric and to the carpet edges that surround the hole you cut out.
Hold the patch in place for a little while.
If the rip is small enough you might need to lengthen it with the utility knife.
A line or 2 of glue on the surface of the carpet pad will often be sufficient.
Orient the patch so the grain of the carpet runs the same direction as the installed carpet then.

Place your patch to fill the hole the way that the patch s fibers follow the direction of the rest carpeting fibers.
